High School Senior Session for a 1980 Graduate!

Senior Session | Zookbinders

I met our clients Jon and Linsday Betz in 2007 when they were just starting their pro photography business.  Jon is the photographic artist, and Lindsay… pretty much does everything else. They attended the WPPI Business Institute to learn how to run a successful photography business, and 10 years later… they should be teaching the class! This awesome husband and wife team recently invited me to give a presentation to their local PPA affiliate in Colorado Springs. With the Rocky Mountains and the Garden of the Gods as their “outdoor studio”, their High School Senior business is booming!  They insisted on some sight-seeing before the meeting, and I joked that I’m envious of  the high school boys that they photograph in their baseball uniform so…38 years after I graduated high school, I now have a stunning “Senior” photo! A week after the meeting I received a surprise care package, so now I can trade photos with my friends 🙂 After our session in the mountains, I met a group of very talented and business minded photographers. I meet with many pro photographers throughout the US and often ask “how’s the business climate”? Often times the trends are about a decreasing number of full time business operators, and an increase in transitioning from studios/offices to working from home. Except in Colorado Springs!  I was asked to talk about how to “Boost Your Bottom Line”, and was thrilled to learn that… they didn’t need a whole lot of advice. Wedding photographers were getting healthy prices, and all types of Portrait Photographers (including Senior, Family & Boudoir) were doing extremely well.  Almost everyone sold professional wedding album and portrait albums and other physical products like wall art. Here are some of the key takeaways from the meeting:

  1. When updating your Sample Albums, use the images from 1 wedding and make 3 albums with varying features and price points.  If a client sees wedding albums with 100, 75 and 50 photos, they will be much more likely to order the album with more photos, as the 50 image album can’t tell the same story..
  2. For weddings, deliver edited images within 2 weeks and pre-select the photos you recommend for the wedding album.
  3. On a humorous note…one of the positives of so many divorces is that there are more sets of parents to sell parent albums to!
  4. The tallest mountain in Colorado Springs is ~ 14,000’ taller than the tallest “mountain” in Illinois 🙂

Thanks Colorado Springs – can’t wait to come back!
