Introducing zookie.com

Friday, October 14th, 2011

This fall, Zookbinders will begin offering a design, print and bind service direct to the consumer. The new service, called zookie.com, will serve the growing number of “albumless couples” who have their wedding images on a disk…but have no album.
Digital Aftereffect - zookie.com is a new business opportunity that came about as an aftereffect of digital photography. Due to the growing trend of “shoot and burn” wedding photography, our research suggests that 70-80% of today’s brides are contracting for a high-res disk of images only.

Very often shoot and burn providers lack the means, the ability, and often even the desire to offer their customers a full-service experience that would include a wedding album. In fact, their business model often relies on a simple exchange of un-retouched, unedited files on DVD and a modest profit. Married couples are left to go directly to drug store photo finishers for their reprints and online photo book retailers to get a wedding album. Many will either be overwhelmed with the project of sorting and selecting their favorites, then using tedious online design tools, or they may be underwhelmed by the availability of quality products out there.

Frustrated by the production process, many newlyweds never do anything about getting a wedding album. Instead, the elusive album becomes a well-intended goal that is never within reach, like taking a yoga class or organizing their Tupperware cabinet. zookie.com is ideally suited for this audience: married couples who want a good quality, nicely-designed wedding album, without the do-it-yourself hassle, AND whose photographers are unable to provide it.

Targeting Married Couples – For our consumer brand, our marketing efforts will target those couples who are already married and who own their high-res files. Our value proposition includes not only design, print and bind, but a unique feature whereby we’ll also select the photos for them. In focus groups, brides shared with us how difficult it is to select photos, so we’ll ask them to send us a copy of the disk and let our design experts select the photos for them.
Naturally, some photographers will feel that Zookbinders is unfairly cutting out what has been a traditional profit center for professional photographers. This is certainly not the case or our intention. For the past 7-8 years, we have been saying “no” to newlyweds who call us requesting that we make their album. zookie.com is the solution for this underserved market. And rather than offer the service through Zookbinders (which is set up to work with pro photographers), we created a separate website to avoid confusion with Zookbinders.

There will always be a market segment that wants the photographer to design and deliver a finished album. These clients will continue to have their needs met by “full-service” photographers with our full support – we will always recommend that couples only hire a professional photographer for their wedding or special event, and Zookbinders will always help photographers finish the job.
The New Normal - When Joseph Kennedy said, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going,” he must have perceived something about business in the 21st century. At Zookbinders, we have no intention of going the way of the one-hour film lab or corner travel agency. We believe that the new business rules call for innovators to innovate rather than grumble about where the industry has gone and hope it somehow “returns to normal.” We’ve been on the front lines bringing new and more attractive products to market and our direct-to-consumer initiative is another step in that direction.
Only a few years ago, I-T was a PRONOUN, 4G was a parking space, and the World Wide Web was a science fiction movie about mutant spiders bent on world domination. Back then, Zookbinders’ business was assembling albums with prints shipped to us from photographers. Now, we’re printing albums in our in-house lab, as well as offering an expanded selection of digital press printed books that help photographers “design it once, and sell it twice.”  As of this year, we offer a one-stop shop of design, print and bind, making life easier and more profitable for the professional photographer while vastly improving the customer experience for clients. We’ve made a very significant investment to bring our album design service to pro photographers, and will continue to invest in new products and better workflows that make your job easier.
Our commitment to the professional photographer is unchanged by zookie.com. You can continue to count on Zookbinders for a wide array of top quality, made in America products that showcase your creative talents and keep your clients’ memories alive.

The look of photographic paper at press print prices! How you can wow your customers and fatten your wallet!

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

At Zookbinders, we are constantly re-examining our product line in an effort to bring new innovation to our pro photographer customers. In the past year we have brought matte finish paper to PhotoBook / PhotoBook Plus; we introduced the photographically printed LustreBook line; we launched our design, print and bind service called zookie pro; and we’ve added folded panorama construction and upgraded packaging to Zook Books. Despite all this activity, we’re really just getting started!

This week we launch of our latest offering which is a satin paper finish for our press printed PhotoBook and PhotoBook Plus product line.

When we introduced digital press PhotoBooks in 2007, we did so with a high gloss, laminated paper finish that is durable and really makes color pop. While the attractive pricing opened up a wealth of new sales opportunities from companion albums to high school senior keepsakes, many photographers wanted something not so shiny and less prone to finger printing. After one false start in 2009, we re-introduced our current matte paper surface in mid 2010. This paper has a rich, pebble texture and an almost water color reproduction of color and contrast. This paper has high appeal for those looking to add an artistic touch to their imagery. Still, many photographers just wanted their PhotoBooks to look more like PHOTO albums.

Our new satin finish fills that sweet spot for those who find the glossy too shiny, the matte too dull, and books with photographic paper too expensive. We believe it’s our most attractive look ever in a press printed book! It looks so much like e-surface photographic print that we can’t even show you the difference here online! We’ve already begun to see many orders for satin finish only 4 days into its availability. We’d love to hear from those of you who have placed the first orders once you have received your books. Add a comment below or on our Facebook page!

We at Zookbinders feel that our new satin paper surface is a big deal. After scores or tests involving dozens of papers and manufacturing techniques, we’ve hit upon the right paper and manufacturing formula to pass our rigorous environmental testing, and we know your clients will love it!

To order satin finish PhotoBook and PhotoBook plus, simply select “Satin Pages” from the page finish tab found in the cover options palate in ROES.

zookie pro open house recap

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

Last night, Zookbinders held an open house at our Deerfield, Illinois facility to celebrate the launch of our zookie pro service. Despite stiff local competition from the Bulls vs. Pacers basketball playoff game, about 120 area photographers attended and were treated to….well treats….production plant tours, product displays and a presentation by Zookbinders founder and CEO Mark Zucker. Our in-factory "classroom"

There’s no better place for a meeting than right in the middle of a factory floor!

Mark delivered his “what brides want” message to an attentive audience. Simply put, the driving principle behind zookie pro is to help our photographer partners simplify their work flow, capture greater album and product sales while simultaneously providing a pleasing and speedier customer experience for the bride. Simple, elegant designs together with high quality album products and back-end marketing support are the hallmarks of the zookie pro service.

So, if you find yourself trapped in the “digital dungeon” working on album designs late into the night, or if you are tired of waiting on time-starved brides to sort through their wedding images and give you an album order, we invite you to reexamine your work flow, reinvigorate your business, and re-energize yourself by giving zookie pro a try. All you have to lose is money….and perhaps those bags under your eyes! A big THANK YOU to all who attended!

Designing Your Own Album

Zookbinders’ Ten Tips for Designing Your Own Albums

For several months we’ve been sharing with you how much easier your life can be and how much more money you can make by utilizing zookie pro, Zookbinders’ new album design and fulfillment service. We of course realize that some of you, whether new to the industry or with many years of experience, do enjoy designing albums yourself. To help ensure you are creating the best possible album for your clients, we’ve put together our top ten design tips. These tips are primarily for flush or collage style albums but would work for matted albums too.

  1. Shoot for the Album. Think about the album as you photograph your event. Be sure to create background images, images that will compliment one another on a page and that tell a story together.
  2. Streamline Your Workflow. If you want to enjoy your album designing, you need to be efficient. If you use Photoshop, use templates and learn short cuts so you can design quickly and make easy modifications. If you are uncomfortable with Photoshop, find a design solution that you do enjoy and is easy to use. There are many options out there and most have free trials.
  3. Organize Your Images. Whether you select the album images or let your client, start your album design by grouping images in separate folders for each page spread.
  4. Keep it Simple. The best designs are simple and let the images take center stage. Avoid needless or too many embellishments, use graphical elements that enhance the theme of the event or layout and that don’t detract from it.
  5. Use a Feature Image. Page layouts with a key image, designed larger on the page, complimented with a series of smaller images is much more interesting that a page with all the images the same size.
  6. Use Negative Space. Just because you have a 12×24 canvas in front of you doesn’t mean you have to fill every square inch. Negative space can be as important to your images in your final design.
  7. Set a Theme. A theme can be the color of your backgrounds and borders, whether or not you use background images or any number of design elements that create a cohesive look to your page layouts.
  8. Selectively Use Color and Black & White. You and some of your clients may prefer all color or all B&W image layouts. To add impact, use these design choices to add drama and emphasis. Imagine how much a color image would pop off the page if it was surrounded by B&W images.
  9. Know When to Break the Rules. Variety is the spice of life.
  10. Post and Promote. Once your layout is approved by your client, post the layout to your blog or Facebook page. Album layouts not only show off your design skills but your photography and ability to tell a story. It’s a great promotional tool.

For those of you who have taken the zookie pro test drive and seen the power of our customized shopping cart, please note that we will be making this cart available to all Zookbinders’ clients later this year when we launch our new ordering system to replace ROES. With this new system, you’ll be able to upload your page spreads and have us create a digital flip book and custom shopping cart for your clients to view their album. They will be able to suggest changes, place their order for their main album and add parent books and framed page spreads to the order as well. Stay tuned for more information as we get closer to our launch date.
